Unit 5 Glossary

International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Procedure Coding System — used exclusively for inpatient hospital procedure coding. The third character of a PCS code, defining the objective of the procedure (e.g., Excision, Resection, Replacement). PCS root operation — cutting out or off, without replacement, a PORTION of a body part. PCS root operation — cutting out or off, without replacement, ALL of a body part. The fifth character in ICD-10-PCS, specifying the method to reach the operative site. A grid in the code book that presents valid character combinations for building a complete 7-character code. The seventh PCS character providing additional specificity about the procedure. A coding system where each character has independent meaning and can be combined to describe unique procedures.
