Unit 2 Glossary
A word root plus a connecting vowel (usually 'o') that allows the root to join other word elements. A word part attached before the root that modifies its meaning (e.g., hyper-, brady-, peri-). A word part attached after the root indicating a procedure, condition, or disease (e.g., -itis, -ectomy, -ology). Standard reference position: standing erect, facing forward, arms at sides, palms facing forward. Death of heart muscle tissue due to prolonged ischemia; commonly known as a heart attack. The functional unit of the kidney consisting of the glomerulus and tubules. A stroke — interruption of blood supply to the brain causing cell death and neurological deficits. Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange between air and blood occurs.
