Glossary: Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)

A safety procedure used to ensure that dangerous machines are properly shut off and are unable to be started up prior to the completion of maintenance or servicing work. It involves the placement of locks and/or tags on energy isolating devices to prevent unexpected energization or startup of machinery, as required by OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.147.
