Glossary: Lockout Device
A device that utilizes a positive means such as a key or combination lock to hold an energy isolating device in a safe position, thereby preventing the energizing of a machine or equipment. It physically prevents the unexpected startup or release of stored energy. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147(c)(5)(ii)(A) outlines requirements for lockout devices.
