Glossary: Energy Isolating Device (EID)

A mechanical device that physically prevents the transmission or release of energy. Examples include manually operated electrical circuit breakers, disconnect switches, line valves, and blocks. It is the device that is locked out or tagged out to prevent accidental energization. (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147(b))
